Working With Fonts

Fonts on Websites are very tricky. A font on a website can only be displayed, if it is installed on the computer of the visitor. Unfortunately have different computer systems and users different fonts installed. So you can't be shure that a user has your favorite font for your website installed.

Fonts in Goldfish

  1. Websafe Fonts: There are fonts which are installed on most computers (Windows, Macintosh and Linux). Websave Fonts are Arial, Courier, Georgia, Geneva, Helvetica, Lucida Grande, Times, Trebuchet and Verdana. If you use this fonts on your website, it will be displayed on most computers correctly.
  2. Alternative Fonts: Choose always fonts which will be displayed if your favourite font is not installed. Click on the "Alternative Fonts" icon at every font chooser. There you can choose other fonts. If the font on the top of the list isn't found the next font is used and so on. At the end of the list is a default font types, which is used if no other font was found.
  3. Font Style: Not every font is available in every font style (e.g Capitals only regular, not in bold or italic, Arial has all styles). Some applications emulate missing font styles (Firefox, Goldfish...), others not (Safari, TextEdit...). So if you choose Capitals and use the style bold it will displayed in Goldfish and Firefox without problems, but Safari uses another font because the style is missing. Please make shure that you only use fonts and font styles which are displayed in the Mac OS X Font Book.
  4. Line breakes: Every application and every system handle text a little bit different. You can't be shure if a line break is displayed in Goldfish, that it also will be displayed in all available browsers on the same place. Please make shure in your layout that the text can have small differences in length.
